Georgia’s Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze has spoken on the phone with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov regarding the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
This afternoon the Georgian official instigated the phone conversation.
[Janelidze] expressed his utter concern regarding the escalation of the situation along the Nagorno-Karabakh Line of Contact during recent days, which, unfortunately has caused casualties, including civilians,” the Ministry said in a written statement.
The Georgian Minister stressed the importance of cessation of hostilities and ensuring peace.
Janelidze hoped the efforts of the global community would result in de-escalation of the situation, which he believed was important for ensuring peace and stability in the region.
The Georgian official was also due to speak with the Armenian Foreign Minister too.
"A phone conversation is planned between Georgia’s Foreign Minister and his Armenian counterpart,” the Ministry’s statement said.
Heavy fighting in the disputed territory began on Friday night and continued through to Sunday evening, killing at least 30 soldiers, reported the BBC.
