Award-winning Georgian film airs in millions of European homes

An award-winning Georgian documentary could be viewed in more than 90 million households in Europe after two television broadcasters gained the rights to screen the clip.

When the Earth Seems to Be Light by debuting directors Salome Machaidze, Tamuna Karumidze and David Meskhi was selected by 3Sat Central European public broadcasting channel and RTV Slovenia to screen to their audiences.

3Sat Central European will broadcast the feature-length documentary to more than 85 million households in Germany, Austria and Switzerland while RTV Slovenia will broadcast the show to its audience of more than 7 million Slovenian households.

The documentary tells the story of young Georgian skaters who deal with daily realities that starkly contrast their dreams.

When the Earth Seems to Be Light premiered in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi on October 19, 2015.

With a full Georgian cast of actors, the film was produced with support from the Georgian National Film Centre.

The production was awarded the Best Documentary Film prize at the 2015 Tbilisi International Festival, as well as the IDFA 2015 First Appearance Award in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Twice this week, on February 21 and 26, the feature film screened at the 2016 Istanbul Independent Film Festival.
