Six people have been detained for committing and inciting violence at a polling station in Marneuli on October 8 as Georgia's marked Election Day.
Today Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed six people aged between 19 and 25 were detained for committing and inciting violence at #48 polling station in Kizil-Ajlo village in southern Marneuli district.
The names of the six people detained have not been publicly released.
Watch the video of detention, released today by Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs:
Our investigation revealed these people were particularly aggressive. They urged other people to run into the polling station and steal the ballot box. They threw stones at the police, who were called to the scene to stop the fighting and provide peace,” the Ministry said.
Several police officers were injured in the clash but the ballot box was kept safe by election officials and police.
The building of N.1 Public School of Kizil-Ajlo village, which hosted the polling station on Election Day, was so damaged that three days were needed to repair the building.
The incident was caught on video, which helped the Ministry of Internal Affairs to identify the main offenders.
The Chief Prosecutor's Office of Georgia said it would urge that the six people are sentenced to pre-trial detention as a preventive measure, as elections are still continuing in Georgia.
The detention of six people were criticised by members of United National Movement (UNM) opposition party.
UNM party members gathered in front of a police building in Marneuli early today and claimed the six people had been illegally detained. They claimed police raided the alleged offenders' homes and physically assaulted them and their family members.
Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs refuted these accusations and said they were completely false.
