Two members of opposition party United National Movement have been formally charged for insulting and attacking young supporters of the ruling Georgia Dream-Democratic Georgia (GDDG) political party.

The country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs did not name the alleged offenders but said two people had been charged for being violent, or threatening violence during the pre-election period in Georgia.

The charges relate to an incident that occurred on Saturday, October 1 in Didinedzi Village in western Samegrelo region, where three members of the youth branch of GDDG were threatened and physically assaulted as they handed out election flyers.

Two of the victims suffered head injuries and concussion, while the third had superficial injuries to his head, said doctors at the time when the trio were hospitalised.

Shortly after the incident Georgia’s Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili called on law enforcers to thoroughly investigate the case and to adequately punish all the offenders involved.

Five leading Georgian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) also urged for swift investigation of the case.
