The vibrant pedestrian crossing painted in bright hues in Georgia’s capital has been named as one of the most creative crosswalks in the world.

British newspaper The Guardian showed photos of creative crosswalks from all over the world in a piece published online. The zebra crossing in Tbilisi was ranked second in the world behind Chile, which ranked first.

The Guardian piece profiled 15 creative pedestrian crossings in its ‘pictures’ section.

Whether for safety, art or celebration, pedestrian crossings in cities around the world have been transformed with colourful or unusual designs – from rainbows and piano keyboards to French fries and bullets,” wrote The Guardian.

Located in Tbilisi’s Didube district, the pedestrian crossing was painted in a joint effort by art students and the district's public employees. The purpose was to bring attention to pedestrian crossings and raise awareness of road safety in Tbilisi.

As well as boasting bright colours, words written next to the crossing in Georgian language read the slogan ‘For Your Safety’. The painting was done within the State Program for Traffic Safety.

Tbilisi officials were currently pushing to raise awareness of road safety. Last year 90 people died and 3,834 were injured in road accidents in Georgia’s capital city.

Pedestrians were also among the victims of road accidents. Last year 43 pedestrian died and 1,035 pedestrians were injured in road accidents, said Georgia Alliance for Safe Roads.
