New bypass around Georgia’s capital Tbilisi announced

Travellers moving through Georgia's capital will soon be able to drive along a new bypass road that detours the central city, offering them a pleasant journey with lush scenery along a top quality road that meets international standards.

Today it was announced the Asian Development Bank has allocated "several million GEL” to finance the new Tbilisi Bypass Road project.

The Roads Department of Georgia said work on the project started today, and announced a tender for preparing the technical feasibility study of the bypass road. The project documentation should be designed within 15 months.

Starting from Natakhtari on the outskirts of capital Tbilisi, the new Tbilisi Bypass Road will head to Zhinvali, in Georgia’s Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. The bypass road spans about 20km long.

The Roads Department said the new Tbilisi Bypass Road would solve the problems caused by the landslides on the existing bypass road.

The Department said the Tbilisi Bypass Road was of huge great importance; it would provide a city detour route to transit local and international goods.
