For the first time in 25 years a group of international scientists are monitoring the water quality along the Black Sea coastline in Georgia.
A group of 40 experts from European Union (EU) countries and Ukraine are researching the coastline using Romanian research vessel Mare Nigrum.
This will be the first time foreign scientists have surveyed the water quality in the Black Sea since 1991.
A group of experts arrived in Batumi Port earlier this week.
While here the experts will carry out biological and chemical testing of the water and check the situation regarding solid waste in the sea. The results of the research will allow the experts to define the biodiversity and pollution level of the Black Sea.
The project is part of Improving Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea (EMBLAS) is an EU-UNDP regional initiative for Georgia, Russia and Ukraine. The program helps strengthen the capacities of the three countries for biological and chemical monitoring of water quality in the Black Sea in line with EU water-related legislation.
