Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili announced June 8, 2016 is the official date political parties in Georgia can begin campaigning for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections, set for October 8, 2016.
This decision was made after he met with Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the Speaker of Parliament David Usupashvili this evening at the President’s Administration.
Head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Tamar Zhvania and the Secretary of the President’s National Security Council Irina Imerlishvili also attended the discussion.
"As the public knows, we agreed on the election date. It remains the same – October 8."
"As for the date when parties can begin their election campaigns, we discussed it and came to a consensus to begin campaigning on June 8. It will continue for four months,” President Margvelashvili told local media after the meeting.

The date of this year’s Parliamentary Elections was announced by the President of Georgia on April 5 after he met and agreed on a date with Prime Minister Kvirikashvili.
According to Georgia’s Constitution, Parliamentary Elections must be held in October however it was up to the President to determine the exact date. The President’s decision then needed to be confirmed by the Prime Minister.
After this the two officials must agree on a date to begin election campaigning.
