Major disinfection of Georgia’s coastal zone begins

Georgian authorities are taking genuine steps to ensure the country is well prepared for the upcoming summer season for locals and tourists.

Today several top officials announced large-scaled disinfection work targeting mosquitoes and other disease-bearing insects will be carried out in western Georgia to reduce the spread of contagious diseases generally spread by insects.

After a special meeting at the Ministry of Health today Georgian experts said the disinfection works would occur along the coastal area from Anaklia to Sarpi, on the Black Sea coastline. The spraying will begin on Monday, May 9, and continue in the coming days and weeks if necessary.

Today’s meeting was attended by the Minister of  Labour, Health  and Social Affairs Davit Sergeenko, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nodar Kereselidze, head of the National Centre of the Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze  and Deputy Head of the National Food Agency Merab Lipartia. 

The officials agreed their agencies would share the responsibility of the disinfection process. 

In this sense the Ministry of Health said it would disinfect the interior of buildings located in the seaside zone, while the Ministry of Agriculture will focus on disinfecting large, open spaces and water reservoirs. 

Gamkrelidze said in total 700 hectares of area encompassing residential and commercial buildings would be disinfected by the Ministry of Health, while the Ministry of Agriculture would disinfect about 2,000 hectares of land and area. 

Hotels will be responsible for disinfecting their own facilities.
