Georgia’s Interior Minister begins Germany visit

The country’s Minister of Internal Affairs has travelled to Germany to deepen cooperation between his institution and those of his German counterparts.

The official visit of Vakhtang Gomelauri and a Georgian delegation began today. During his time abroad the Georgian official is scheduled meet Germany Minister of Internal Affairs Thomas de Maiziere and the president of the German Federal Criminal Office Holger Muench.

The sides planned to discuss the progress achieved by Georgia as it worked to implement the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan, prospects of cooperation in the policing sphere and future plans, Georgian Interior Ministry said.

"It should be noted that the cooperation between the Interior Ministries of Georgia and Germany has moved to the active phase in recent years,” said the Ministry in a special statement.

The statement reminded Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs paid an official visit to the German Federal Republic from July 8-10, 2014, during which both sides signed an agreement "On Cooperation Against Organised Crime, Terrorism and Other Serious Crimes, between the governments of Georgia and the German Federal Republic.

Meanwhile during Gomelauri’s German trip, he planned to visit the training facility of Germany’s Interior Ministry, where the Georgian delegation will attend a demonstrative training of Berlin’s police force. He will also meet vice president of the Berlin police force Ralph Krueger.

Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs is being accompanied to Germany by Deputy Interior Minister Levan Izoria, director of the International Relations Department Shalva Kvinikhidze and director of the Central Criminal Police Department Ivane Papiashvili.
