Russia remains leader of remittances to Georgia

National Bank President said 5% growth can be achieved but there were risks as a result of the instability in Ukraine.

In December 2014, the volume of money transferred from abroad constituted $116.1 million USD (218.8 million GEL), which was 25 percent less ($38.5 million USD or 72.5 million GEL) than the amount in December 2013. With $46.9 million USD, the Russian Federation lead the list of the top countries from which the largest share of remittances were sent to Georgia.

Just over 91 percent of the total money transferred from abroad came from 11 big donor countries - the volume of transfers from these countries exceeded $1.5 million USD in December 2014. In December 2013 the share of these 11 countries constituted 92.7 percent of the total volume of money transfers.

In December last year $20.2 million USD (38.1 million GEL) was transferred from Georgia, as compared to the $15.4 million USD (or 26.3 million GEL) in December 2013.

In January 2014, $12.2 million USD (21.5 million GEL) was transferred from Georgia, as compared to $9.5 million USD (15.7 million GEL) in January 2013.

The transfer of money to Georgia continued unabated year by year. The total volume of inflow amounted to $1,476,661 USD in 2013. This was up from $1,334,174 USD in 2012 and $1,268,127 USD in 2011.

Growth applied to outflow as well, however the 2013 figure made up just 10.5 percent of the amount of inflow. About $155.3 million USD was transferred from Georgia in 2013, up from $108.1 million USD in 2012 and $100.2 million USD in 2011.

The Russian Federation, Greece and Ukraine were the top three countries in which the largest amount of money was transferred from Georgia. $51.2 million USD was transferred to the Russian Federation, $17 million to Greece, $22.3 million to Ukraine.
