Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has sent a letter of congratulations to Croatia’s newly elected president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

"Please accept my sincere congratulations on your victory in the presidential election and my best wishes for success in your future activities for the benefit of your country and people,” Garibashvili wrote.

"I remain confident that the existing friendly relations between Georgia and the Republic of Croatia will only strengthen in the future, while our cooperation will further develop and deepen for the benefit of our nations.”

Grabar-Kitarovic has become the first female president of Croatia.

She is a politically conservative member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which pushed the country towards independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991.

The 46-year-old is a former foreign minister and assistant to the NATO secretary general.

Croatia became the newest member of the European Union (EU) when it joined in July 2013.
