Man who killed one police officer and injured another in Telavi detained

Georgia’s law-enforcement bodies have instantly detained a man who killed one police officer and left another heavily injured in western Kakheti region town-Telavi today. 

The detainee has been identified as 19-year-old Sandro M. 

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has unfolded the details of the fatal fact, saying that the detainee, who lived near the Telavi police station, opened fire from his house fence to a female police officer Maya Javakhishvili, standing in the yard of the police building. 

Sandro M used a hunting gun to carry out the action. 

Hearing the shooting another police officer, Gela Lamazoshvili, ran out of the police station and tried to help Javashishvili who was lying on the ground.  However, Sandro M shot again and wounded Lamazoshvili, who died shortly in hospital, MIA announced.  

The Ministry also said that the wounded Javashvili’s health condition has been assessed as heavy by doctors. Currently she is undertaking a medical treatment in a local hospital. 

Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili arrived in Telavi several hours after the fact and visited the injured police officer in hospital. The Minister announced that a group of doctors have been sent to Telavi through a helicopter to treat Javakhishvili. 

Due to the fact the festive events and concerts planned to celebrate the New Year holiday in Telavi postponed, Kakheti region Governor Irakli Shiolashvili said. 

The Ministry continued that Sandro M was trying to hide but he was caught in several minutes after committing the crime and his gun has been taken out as evidence. 

The investigation has launched on the fact of premeditated murder in aggravated circumstances.
