A Georgian Government official says the country must work on seven things to boost the country’s agricultural sector.
Georgia’s Agriculture Minister Otar Danelia presented the country’s Agriculture Development Strategy to representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia and announced seven strategic directions had been set to improve the agricultural sector.
Danelia said the Ministry’s strategy for developing Georgia’s agriculture sector was about creating an environment that will improve competitiveness in the agro sector.
The strategy also included issues relating to producing high quality products, food safety and rural poverty reduction.
To have positive results it is important to develop a proper agricultural policy and to care about attracting financial resources in this sector. Food safety and food security are issues which need to be improved as soon as possible in Georgia,” Danelia said.
To address these issues, a specific action plan would soon be drawn up based on the seven points of action.
These directions are:
1.Improving the competitiveness of people employed in the agro sector;
2.Institutional development;
3.Land improvement and soil fertility;
4.Regional and sectoral development;
5.Food security;
6.Food safety, veterinary science and plant protection; and
7.Climate change, environment and biodiversity conservation.
The strategy also included implementing all the regulations stated in the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).
The Ministry of Agriculture positively assessed the efforts of different donor and international organisations in developing Georgia’s agriculture strategy.
