Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili is sending his congratulations to the people of Hungary and its Prime Minister today on the 59th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution, which foreshadowed the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Garibashvili addressed a letter to his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban offering his best wishes and support.

In the letter Garibashvili said the 1956 revolution was a "clear demonstration of the Hungarian people’s devotion to freedom and democracy”.

He also emphasised the significance of the friendly relations between Georgia and Hungary and thanked his counterpart for supporting Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

I remain hopeful that our bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened for the mutual benefit of our nations,” Garibashvili said
I wish you further success, as well as peace, prosperity and welfare,” Garibashvili wrote.

The 1956 Hungarian revolution was a spontaneous nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies. The uprising lasted from October 23 to November 19, 1956. Although the revolt failed, it was highly influential and foreshadowed the downfall of the Soviet Union.
