Georgia’s law enforcement agencies are taking a tougher stance on drugs; detaining eight people in the past month for drug-related violations.
A Batumi man is the latest person to be detained for allegedly purchasing and possessing drugs on Georgian territory.
Today Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs released a statement noting officers of the Adjara Regional Main Division detained a Batumi resident, only identified as Shmagi Sh, today for illegal purchase, import and possession of drugs in Georgia.
Police seized 11.331g of drugs off the 25-year-old, which allegedly contained 4.5365g of heroin.
The detainee has already pleaded guilty, said the Ministry.
An investigation was now underway regarding illegal purchase, import and possession of a large amount of drugs on Georgian territory.
In recent weeks Georgian law enforcement agencies have caught several people allegedly attempting to bring drugs into the country.
On August 26 three foreigners were detained at Tbilisi International Airport for allegedly bringing large quantities of drugs into Georgia. The trio – a citizen from Brazil and two from South Africa – were detained for allegedly importing 4kg cocaine and 14kg of marijuana into the country.
On August 19, Georgian officials detained four people – two Brazilian citizens, one from Ecuador and another from South Africa – for allegedly importing drugs into Georgia and possession of large quantities of narcotics.
The four people were detained at Tbilisi International Airport as they allegedly attempted to smuggle 196 packages containing almost 2.23kg of cocaine into the country.
