Georgian Parliament Speaker set to visit US

Georgia’s Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili is set to pay a working visit to the United States (US).
Usupashvili will hold high-level meetings before speaking at the fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on September 1.
The three-day conference will begin on August 31 and will be attended by about 140 Speakers of Parliament from across the world.
The conference will focus on peace, democracy and developments seen through the parliamentary lens.
Within the framework of the visit Usupashvili was also scheduled to meet President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Anne Brasseur and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE Ilkka Kanerva.
The conference is part of a series of high-level meetings leading up to the UN Summit in late September, during which the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be launched.
The Georgian Parliament Speaker will return home on September 3.
A high-ranking official from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has commended Georgia for its "considerable” reforms.
Speeding up Georgia’s integration into NATO and strengthening the country’s defence capabilities are two goals the Georgian Parliament Speaker will try to get closer to at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels tomorrow.
"Today Georgia is as ready to be a NATO member, as were incumbent members when they were invited to join the Alliance." These words were spoken by Georgia’s Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA) session in Budapest.
The United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is concerned by reports of continued "borderisation” along the Administrative Boundary Lines between two Russian-occupied Georgian regions – Abkhazia and South Ossetia – and the rest of Georgia.
