The countdown is on until the bird hunting season begins in Georgia.

From tomorrow, August 15, the migratory bird hunting season will open and continue for the next seven months. The hunting season will officially close on March 1, 2016.

The hunting season is separated into several periods.

Georgia’s Environment Ministry set several regulations for bird hunters that limit the number of birds that can be killed per day and the areas where hunting is permitted.

From now until February 15 hunters are allowed to kill five gallinago, 20 quail, 10 common wood pigeons, 10 rock doves, 10 stock doves and 10 European turtle doves per day.

From September 10 to November 10 one group of hunters are permitted to kill waterfowl while the second group of waterfowl hunters can hunt between November 1 and March 1.

The waterfowl quota includes 10 black goose, 10 black duck, three Eurasian teal, five mallard, two garganey, two northern shoveler, five Eurasian coot, two northern pintail, three Eurasian wigeon (do you mean pigeon?), three greater white-fronted goose, two common pochard and three tufted duck (three units).

Those wanting to hunt on Georgian territory must pay 10 GEL to gain a hunting permit and keep the receipt to show hunting officers when asked.

Hunters are also required to have a permit that allows them to have and keep a gun.

The Environment Ministry warned that hunting was forbidden in Georgia’s protected areas, national parks and within 500m of such territories. Hunting is forbidden near the administrative borders of Georgia’s cities and towns. Hunters are also forbidden to hunt in the former forests of Borjomi and Bakuariani.
