Georgia is making moves to introduce a special law to regulate the country's workforce.

The Georgian Government initiated a draft law on labour migration, which is expected to be submitted to the Parliament Bureau in the near future.

The law will regulate the employment of Georgian citizens, foreigners who have permanent residence in Georgia or those who do not have citizenship. The law will also regulate the employment and paid work-based activities of foreigners who do not have a permanent residence permit in Georgia.

An explanatory note on the law stated Georgia should have a labour migration mechanism that enabled investors to bring a labour force into the country only in the case where an employer cannot find staff with appropriate qualifications locally.

It also noted the law will contribute to the development of legal labour migration and exclude cases of illegal labour migration and trafficking.

The draft law is being prepared by Georgia’s Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs.
