The family of a Georgian military serviceman who died after suffering critical injuries in Afghanistan is being offered financial compensation from the state.

Georgia’s Minister of Defence Tiantin Khidasheli yesterday announced the family of Corporal Ramaz Davitaia will receive 100,000 GEL.

Corporal Davitaia died from injuries he sustained while serving in a NATO mission in Afghanistan.

We made this decision at a Government meeting today. The financial assistance is foreseen for our military servicemen who passed away in Afghanistan,” said Minister Khidasheli.

Corporal Davitaia died last month after a long battle with illness. He suffered critical wounds while serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in 2012.

He survived three years with his injuries but on June 8 he passed away in a military hospital in Gori, Georgia.
