Official Tbilisi is calling on the international community to adequately assess and respond to Russia’s ongoing defiance against Georgia and its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

On June 19 the Russian Federation ratified its so-called ‘treaty’ on Alliance and Integration with Georgia’s occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.

Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister David Kereselidze held a press conference today and stressed Russia’s actions were "another step towards annexation of Georgian territory.

"The Russian Federation is once again violating its international commitments, including the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008. The Tskhinvali region is part of Georgia and cannot be represented as an independent subject of international law,” Kereselidze noted.

"This action completely contradicts norms of international law and fundamental principles such as state sovereignty, inviolability of borders, territorial integrity and international commitments.”

He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia now called on the international community to give a timely assessment of Russia’s action and to pressure the Russian Federation into ceasing its harmful actions against Georgia and other countries.

"Strong and unanimous support of the international community will be very important to prevent Russia’s destructive actions,” he said.
