Brussels visit: Georgian President will meet NATO, EU leaders

The President of Georgia is meeting the top official from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and other influential European Union (EU) delegates during his two-day official visit to Belgium.

Today President Giorgi Margvelashvili will meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before meeting President of the European Council Donald Tusk and other EU officials tomorrow.

The official agenda noted today’s meeting between Margvelashvili and Stoltenberg would focus on the outcomes of last year’s NATO Summit in Wales and how the country was implementing the Substantial Package, which was offered to Georgia in September 2014.

The meeting will be followed by a press conference which will start at 16:45 (18:45 Tbilisi time) and live-streamed on the NATO website.

After this Margvelashvili is due to participate in the ‘Eastern Partnership – A Partnership of Free Choice’ conference, which will be held at the European Parliament later today.

The main topic of discussion between the Georgian envoy and the EU officials will be the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, Latvia. The sides will talk about what possible results could be reached at the Summit, which will take place on May 21 and 22 in the Latvian capital.

Meanwhile tomorrow, May 12, Margvelashvili will meet European Council President Donald Tusk.

In addition, meetings were also planned between the Georgian President and EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

While in Brussels, Margvelashvili will also meet King Philippe of Belgium.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili is accompanying President Margvelashvili in Belgium.
