Unhygienic conditions and a lack of essential items at Tbilisis homeless shelters have forced the new facilities to be monitored.
Multiple complaints to the Public Defenders Office sparked the decision to monitor the shelters. The residents have complained about unsanitary conditions in the shelters and a lack of essential items.
Homeless shelters in Gori and Kutaisi are already being monitored by the Public Defenders Office. These shelters opened in mid-December.
The Tbilisi temporary shelters officially opened on December 12 and hosted its first needy guests at 2am that morning.
The night shelters, aimed at assisting the vulnerable, were arranged by the Georgian Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure.
