A Polish politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is calling the European Union to sign Association Agreements with Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, including Georgia.
On Tuesday in the European Parliament, while PaweÅ Kowal presented a report that assessed and set priorities for EU relations with EaP countries, he said the next steps taken by the MEP would be remembered in history.
"Our ability to sign an Association Agreement not only with Ukraine, but also with Georgia and Moldova, will determine whether the Eastern Partnership will be remembered in history as a good policy”, he said.
One day later, Kowal's report was adopted by 87% of MEPs present in Strasbourg.
Kowal said the EaP report was originally meant to be a summary of the legislative activities of Parliament over the years from 2009 to 2014, and the message Parliament wanted to leave to the next generation of Europeans.
He remarked that history had chosen a different scenario: "After the events in Ukraine, topics that we take up are not an abstract future, they are not wishes of politicians, neither a dream, but a necessity of action.”
The MEP believed the current situation meant this report, which initially was to indicate general trends, was a very specific response to what was happening today.
