Georgia’s Foreign Minister calls Ukrainian colleague

Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has spoken with Ukraine’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Deshchytsia, in a phone conversation on March 2.

Maia Panjikidze expressed her deep concern about the developing situation in Ukraine and denounced Russia’s aggression toward a sovereign and independent Ukraine.

From the conversation, Deshchytsia confirmed Russian troops were occupying Crimea. Deshchytsia clearly noted Ukraine’s desired a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

According to the Ministry statement, released late last night, Panjikidze responded to the address of world leaders and international Foreign Affairs representatives, which asked the international community to press for immediate action in order to avoid the Ukraine situation from escalating and to not become a witnesses in another occupation of Europe.

Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the strength of the Russian force by Russia and urged for international security measures to be immediately implemented.

The situation should be regarded in the context of regional security and stability of Europe, not only in support Ukraine or Georgia, the statement said.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian diplomat confirmed it was essential the international community took "effective engagement” and expressed hope that an upcoming meeting with NATO and EU Foreign Ministers will bring certain outcomes in the terms of deescalating the current situation in Ukraine, the official statement read.

During the conversation, Panjikidze responded to the resolution adopted by the European Parliament, which measured as a serious message regarding Ukraine's European perspective.

In response, the Ukrainian diplomat spoke about Government’s assessment of signing the Association Agreement with the European Union and he endorsed readiness to renew work in this direction.

At the end of the conversation, Panjikidze reaffirmed Georgia’s solidarity with Ukraine and its people. She wished courage, vision and success to Ukraine’s new Government.

For his part, Deshchytsia thanked Panjikidze for the shared support. 

According to Ukraine's Foreign Ministry website, Deshchytsia invited his Georgian counterpart to pay an official visit to Ukraine in the nearest future. The visit will aim to provide practical international support for Ukraine.
