Georgian authorities state the Russian occupation forces have renewed illegal actions alongside the occupation line in the Tskhinvali region, breakaway region of South Ossetia.

According to a statement released today, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia are deeply concerned over those illegal actions of the Russian forces.

"During the last few days the Russian occupation forces have renewed the illegal process of the installing barbed wire fences in the villages of Gogeti and Atotsi in the Kareli dirstrict,” read the Ministry statement.

"The process of installing barbed wire fences near Tskhinvali had been stopped for the past two weeks [but resumed] today.”

The Ministry said despite the international society call on Russia to step back, unfortunately the Russian Federation continued to violate principles of the international law and the obligations taken under the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008.

"The Georgian Government condemns such illegal actions as they reflect on the humanitarian state of the local citizens and significantly limits their internationally recognised rights including freedom of movement, language, education and other economic, cultural and social rights,” the statement said.

As a result of the illegal installation of barbed wire fencing, local people were being deprived of their farmland activities and of accessing emergency medical aid. Even their basic right to enter a cemetery had been taken away from them.

In the statement, the Ministry claimed the critical situation in the occupied regions and nearby areas showed it was necessary to create international security mechanisms and human rights monitoring.

Finally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again called the international community to properly evaluate the situation at the occupation lines and take appropriate action and adopt relevant measures to eradicate Russia’s illegal activities.
