"Please do not involve me in politics at all." That was how Georgia’s former President replied to journalists' questions about the scandalous video leaked on the internet featuring himself and other former government officials.
"I have had enough politics in my life, so leave me alone on this issue at least. What is happening here is far more important than everything local from our country,” Saakashvili told journalists.
The secret video leaked on the internet on January 30. It showed Georgia’s ex-Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili order men in military uniform to bring him "two dead bodies”. It is believed the video was taken while the former government was trying to neutralize the mutiny by a Georgian Army tank Battalion based in Mukhrovani on May 5, 2009. Ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili is pictured in the video.
Saakashvili surprisingly appeared at the Security Conference in Munich saying he was asked to attend by the Ukranian boxer- turned-politician and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko. Saakashvili said he was always in contact with Ukrainian opposition leaders since the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the Security Service of the country denied him entry into the country.
"I came [to the conference] for a half day especially to meet with the Ukrainian leaders. I think that not only Ukraine’s fate is being decided right now in Ukraine, but Georgia's too, the whole region and Europe as well,” Saakashvili said.
The Georgian delegation to the Munich Security Conference is headed by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. In Germany Garibashvili will speak at the Global Power and Regional Stability session – a separate event today.
