Georgia is celebrating International Volunteer Day today along with the rest of the world, in a bid to promote selflessness, giving, and raise awareness of the importance of volunteers.

Tbilisi Zoo appeared to be one of the most popular places where people displayed their altruistic ways and volunteered their time.

Today, dozens of volunteer spent time at the Zoo and helped workers care for the animals and complete everyday chores.

Volunteers were actively involved in the washing and cleaning of cages, as well as helping to prepare and distribute food to the Zoo’s residents.

On the Tbilisi Zoo Facebook page, officials thanked the volunteers for their efforts today.

"Our volunteers choose the best way to show their respect and love to animals. Those young people proved their love to our inhabitant by their utterly gratuitous work today,” a Tbilisi Zoo official said.

Meanwhile, Tbilisi Zoo had a volunteering program open to anyone who had a strong passion for animals. Interested people had the chance to become a permanent volunteer at the animal sanctuary, and complete duties including looking after the animals and helping to prepare their meals.

International Volunteer Day is an internationally recognised event celebrated globally on December 5. It was sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.
