Georgia has been given the honour of hosting the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Youth World Wrestling Championship in 2016.

The decision, made by the International Wrestling Federation, was announced today at a meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and president of the International Wrestling Federation Nenad Lalovich.

After announcing Georgia as the host, the sides discussed ways of mutual cooperation and prospects of developing Georgian wrestling.

Lalovich said Georgian wrestling had the "greatest traditions” and it was fact Georgia had won the most Olympic medals in wrestling.

The head of the Georgian Government thanked Lalovich for the great support of the International Wrestling Federation and said he looked forward to continuing their strong relationship.

The first men's Greco-Roman wrestling tournament took place in 1904 and the men's Freestyle wrestling tournament first happened in 1951. The women's Freestyle championships were first staged in 1987.
