Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili is congratulating Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on the Day of German Unity.

Garibashvili released a special statement that said the people of Georgia, who had fought for freedom for centuries, were joining Germany in this celebration.

"Your Excellency, I am deeply honoured to extend my warm congratulations to you on the Day of German Unity. It is an important date not only for Germans, but for the whole world, as October 3 is a triumph of freedom and a successful fight for justice,” he said.

"Germany's unification has strengthened Europe and the Western world in general. The Georgian people, who have fought for freedom for centuries, join this celebration and share your joy and the festive atmosphere surrounding this great day.”

PM Garibashvili also noted that the close friendship between Georgia and Germany was "deepening” and stressed Merkel’s role in this.

"The contribution made to this cause by the German Government and you personally is indeed special. Once again, I thank you for your firm support of our country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and your endorsement of Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” Garibashvili said.

The Georgian leader said he was looking forward to hosting the German Chancellor on a visit to Georgia in the near future.

"I am convinced that your visit will give a renewed and most powerful impetus to the strengthening of the friendship and cooperation between Georgia and Germany. Your visit to our country will serve as a clear demonstration of Germany's support and solidarity for Georgia," stated Garibashvili's message of congratulation.
