Georgia’s leading youth theatre is performing alongside hundreds of others from theatre companies from all over the world at an international festival in Belarus.
Georgia’s Professional State Youth Theatre was one of 46 nations to compete in the "Belaya Vezha” (White Tower)International Theatre Festival in Brest, Belarus.
Over the festival’s 15 year history, the event has become a vital showcase for national and international artists and was now firmly established as Belarus’ leading theatre festival. At the end of the event, leading performances will be rewarded with prizes.
Organisers noted hundreds of writers, artists, performers and musicians creating theatre, spectacle, street art, puppet and dance shows, music, comedy and more came to Brest to produce a stunning week of cultural activity and celebration.
At the festival Georgia will present a bold interpretation of Shakespeare’s well-known play The Winter's Tale, directed by local man Data Tavadze.
The Winter's Tale was originally published in 1623 and although grouped among the comedies, the play has lately been relabelled as one of Shakespeare's late romances.
Some critics considered it to be one of Shakespeare's problem plays, because the first three acts were filled with intense psychological drama, while the last two acts were comedic and supplied a happy ending.
The play has not been particularly popular in Georgian theatre and the current production is an attempt to give the classical play a new life. The Georgian director and young cast present a daring interpretation of the play, balancing on the verge of renaissance art, mythology, complexities and dark sides of the human nature, while detailing a gripping story of love, jealousy, neglect and reunion.
The eight-day festival will begin on September 12, and the Georgian play will be performed on September 19.
