The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)Political Affairs Committeeare supporting amendments to a draft resolution that calls for Russia to comply with the 2008 cease-fire agreement and de-occupation of Georgia’s territories.
The amendments were suggested byGeorgia’s European Integration Committee chairman Victor Dolidze.
The changes involved strengthening Parliamentary oversight of the defense sphere and called for the RussianFederation to comply with the 2008 cease-fire agreement, de-occupation of Georgia’s territories and to respect the principles of international law.
At the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Political Affairs Committee meeting today,members discussed necessary changes to the draft resolution.
Despite Russia’s resistance to the amendments, committee members supported the changes proposed by Dolidze at the Assembly's plenary session.
At the session, the OSCE called for the safe and dignified return of all internally displaced persons to their homes and ensure access to international humanitarian aid when needed. The aim of this was gradual rapprochement of the societies of Abkhazia andSouth Ossetia with Georgia.
The Parliamentary delegation, led by Dolidze,took part in the 23rd Annual Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which has been held from June 28 to July 2 in the capital of Azerbaijan.
The Baku session is particularly devoted to issues such as the security situation in Ukraine and violations of human rights by the Russian Federation. Participants of the meetings also discussed political, economic, environmental, human rights issues and engagement of democratic institutions.
About 300 Members of Parliament from 57 countries are attending the sessions.
