International Day in Support of Victims of Torture has been marked in Georgia.
President Giorgi Margvelashvili released a special address to commemorate the occasion. He expressed his support toward those who had fallen victim to "this barbarous crime”.
"Society should answer questions as to what circumstances create human cruelty, how to prevent oppresive conditions, the weakest one against human beings,” Margvelashvili asked.
He underlined society’s responsibility to create an environment where one person does not have a desire to torture another.
Georgia’s Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili also released a statement about the importance ogf offering support to torture victims.
He said Georgia should create an independent body that would investigate all cases of torture committed by law enforcement agencies.
"It is also very important for the state to properly protect and rehabilitate torture victims,” Nanuashvili said.
