Georgia has made important progress in the revelation of public information, according to the Georgian non-governmental organization, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information.
Georgia has recently adopted a new legislative act, the Government Decree "Electronic Request and Proactive Publication of Public Information, that went into force on September 1.This project was also shortlisted for the Bright Spots Award during the Open Government Partnership Summit in London.
According to the changes in the General Administrative Code of Georgia, all public authorities are obliged to determine their own lists. Apart from this, an electronic request system is currently in development. After its implementation, the process of obtaining public information will be further simplified, as the citizens and organizations had to mail in their requests in the past.
The recommendations from the Right to Information chapter of the Open Government Guide, developed by the Transparency and Accountability Initiative in close cooperation with organizations that specialize in different aspects of Open Governance. The chapter about right to information consists of the recommendations developed with the purpose of assisting governments towards improvements in the area of freedom of information.
The disclosure of public information simplifies the process of accessing information for the general public who, instead of requesting public information from the central governmental bodies and their agencies, can instead see the information proactively published by the said institutions on their websites.
