The 400kW electricity transmission grids and substation Akhaltsikhe was launched by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and the Minister of Energy Kakha Kaladze in Akhaltsikhe.
The Akhaltsikhe substation and the electricity transmission grids that are connected with the Borchas substation in Turkey were built in the framework of the project Black Sea Transmission Network (BSTN) project. The two other substations in Georgia, Vardzia 500 and Zekari 500 have also been repaired.
"The introduction of modern technology will enable Georgia's electrical grid to carry out export and import electric power and its transmission to Turkey and other European countries in compliance with international standards. said PM Garibashvili.
"We are proud to point out that Georgia is the first country in the Caucasus region to have installed a direct current electric power transmission system. There are only a handful of electrical grids employing this type of transmission system. Allow me to congratulate all of you on the opening of this most important substation."
The Turkish Minister of Energy Taner Yildiz, his Azerbaijani counterpart Natig Aliyev and a business delegation from Turkey also attended the substation presentation.
The substation construction was conducted by the Georgian State Electric System and its subsidiary company EnergoTrans.
The total investment of the project Black Sea Transmission Network is over €300 million. The project is supported by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank, German Reconstruction Bank and Georgian Government. The Georgian substation and electricity transmission grids reconstruction is expected to cost €158 million.
