The Associated Press has highlighted World Tourism Day, an annual event held for the first time in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi under the auspices of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation last week.

Claudia Safont, the author of the piece published last week, said the event “shines a spotlight on the crucial theme of ‘Tourism and Peace’”, with the event featuring tourism ministers, international organisations and industry professionals to explore “how tourism can serve as a catalyst for peace, cultural understanding, and sustainable development”.

Tourism has long been recognized for its economic power, creating jobs, boosting economies, and contributing to sustainable development. However, its role as a force for peace is increasingly being acknowledged”, the article said.

Safont noted Tbilisi had welcomed 472 participants from 51 countries for the event, including 13 ministers, eight from the country’s Government.
