A US-take on Georgian Ajaruli Khachapuri is making an impact in Washington. D.C.

The local spin on the traditional Georgian flatbread, filled with cheese, egg and butter, and topped with a sprinkling of dried herbs has been named as one of nine classic dishes in the DC restaurant scene, by ZAGAT online food forum.

Author Rina Rapuano rates the Georgian Khachapuri dish among plates of classic fried chicken, square donuts, a 48-oz steak for two, a Chinese noodle dish, tangy chicken tacos, and Spanish-inspired macaroni cheese.

"We will never, ever stop loving pizza, but this traditional Georgian flatbread sure has given its Italian cousin a run for its money. The dough is topped with cheese, egg and butter before baking. Sound simple? It is, but this combo might just have been the most talked-about dish of last year.”
