Kuriositas: “The Cave City of Vardzia”

The history of Georgian rock cut architecture in the Georgian cave complex Vardzia has been shown in pictures on the art and science website Kuriosita.

Vardzia is a cave city complex near Akhaltsikhe in Southern Georgia. It was built in the 12th Century under the authorization by Queen Tamar in an attempt to defend against Mongolian invaders. Queen Tamar was the first female to hold the Georgian throne but was named King (Mepe).

1185 saw a woman, Tamar, on the throne of Georgia. This was a first for the country and extremely unusual in the Europe of the twelfth century. Her reign nevertheless, saw a flowering of culture and she wished to build a monastery. There was, however, a problem: the Mongols.
