Europeanvoice: Crisis in Crimea creeps up on the Caucasus

The crisis in Crimea is amplifying concerns in the Caucasus, where military activity has recently increased along borders in the region, says journalist Andrew Gardner in an article published on the European Voice website on March 20.

Gardner emphasized that in the past two months, Georgia had reported incursions into its airspace by Russian aircraft, and Azerbaijan's border with Armenia had seen a build-up of military forces.

However, the current government in Tbilisi has been pursuing a policy of ‘constructive de-escalation' with Russia, including with the creation of a special envoy to Russia, without blurring its red lines about non-aggression and territorial integrity. The risk for the government is criticism by its opponents for failing to respond as vigorously as the situation demands.
