Eurasianet: “U.S. Endorses NATO MAP For Georgia”

Georgia’s aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the US’s readiness to endorse Georgia gaining a Membership Action Plan (MAP) are discussed in Joshua Kucera’s article published on the online edition of Eurasianet on February 27.

In 2008 at the Bucharest Summit, NATO declined to give Georgia a MAP but now U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced American would provide "additional assistance" in support of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic vision. On February 5, 40 members of Congress wrote to Kerry and urged the State Department to advocate granting a MAP to Georgia.

We believe Georgia deserves credit at the upcoming NATO Summit for the progress it has made and its demonstrated commitment to NATO operations and standards. We stand ready to support Georgia's own efforts to build a consensus within the Alliance for granting it a Membership Action Plan,” U.S. Assistant Secretary of State of Legislative Affairs Julia Frifield said.
