New York Times: “As Ukraine Crisis Rumbles, Georgian Premier Visits U.S.”

A meeting between Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and US Secretary of State John Kerry was highlighted in an online New York Times article written by journalist Michael R. Gordon and published on February 26.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to develop Georgia’s economy and reinforce its pro-Western path. The journalist emphasized the main issues discussed during the meeting, which were territorial integrity, border security at the breakaway region of Georgia, Euro-Atlantic integration and the current turmoil in Ukraine, which influenced to entire region.

Balancing his interests in joining NATO with his efforts to improve ties to Moscow remains challenging, at best. Georgia has argued that tying its economic policy to the West would not be damaging to Russia, but there is nothing to indicate that Russia’s President Vladimir V. Putin is prepared to accept that argument.
