The Hill: “Georgia along the path to NATO membership”

“The United States and NATO should use the summit as an opportunity to voice their support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations."

Georgia’s Ambassador to the United States Archil Gegeshidze has penned an article for American media outlet The Hill, which outlined the progress Georgia had made to bring the country closer to the European Union (EU) and NATO.

His article comes at a poignant time as next week leaders of NATO member countries will descend upon Wales to attend the NATO Summit – an event the world, and Georgia, will be closely watching.

"The United States and NATO should use the summit as an opportunity to voice their support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and provide a clear path for Georgia’s NATO membership,” Gegeshidze writes.

Why?

As Gegeshidze mentions, Georgia has implemented a number of reforms, particularly in foreign policy and defence and he believed its efforts should be appropriately recognised at next week’s summit.

Now is the time for the US and other members of the North Atlantic alliance to affirm that same vision [of Georgia’s full institutional integration with NATO] by providing Georgia a path to NATO membership at the Wales Summit.”
