Maia Omiadze, the Head of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, on Tuesday emphasised the importance of hosting World Tourism Day, an annual event held under the auspices of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, for the first time in the country.
This year's message is Tourism and Peace. Georgia will once again become the epicentre of international media. From our country, we will send a message to the world about the importance of peace for the development of tourism and travellers”, she said.
Government officials, representatives of international organisations and the tourism industry from around the world will be hosted in the city on Friday, with discussion panels focusing on global tourism trends and the role of peace in fostering industry development.
Very high-ranking delegations, including 25 ministers from different countries, leaders in the tourism and transport sectors, as well as media representatives, will arrive in the country. Georgia will be in the centre of attention of both the international tourism industry and the media for three days”, Mariam Kvrivishvili, the Deputy Economy Minister, said.
Hosting the occasion in Tbilisi will “elevate its standing in the international tourism arena”, the Ministry added.
The decision to grant the city the hosting right was unanimously approved by 38 members of the European Commission of the WTO in 2023.
