The Georgian national football team will face Spain on Sunday in Cologne, Germany, at the ongoing European Championship, in the 1/8 finals, starting at 23:00 Tbilisi time.
The Georgian team includes 25 football players, due to a yellow card, received during the Georgia-Portugal match, Anzor Mekvabishvili will skip the game.
Georgia’s team coach Willy Sagnol on Saturday expressed his pride with his squad's success in reaching the round of 16 at the ongoing European Championship.
“Qualifying [from Group F] was a dream. We were dreaming about reaching the round of 16 but we didn’t think it was possible. We didn’t try to find out before the match who we would play if we won: we just took things as they came. Spain is coming. They’ve probably been the best team in the group stage, so it’s another big challenge. If it’s too big I don’t know, but we’re going to fight from the first minute, as we’ve done throughout this competition”, Sagnol said.
“We will go into this game with a lot of confidence, because we have absolutely nothing to lose. For me, we already won Euro 2024 and I am very excited to be once more on the pitch”, he emphasised.
The Georgian team on Wednesday defeated Portugal 2-0 in their final group stage match and advanced to the playoff round as the best third-placed squad from Group F.
