The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia on Thursday said it had charged a woman for her 14-year-old daughter into a forced marriage in the Marneuli municipality of eastern Georgia.
In its statement the body said an investigation by the Interior Ministry had shown the parent had been involved in “systematic” acts of forcing the minor to marry a man chosen by her family against her will.
The Office also said the actions involved elements of “gender-based discrimination” in the mother’s “disregard for the opinion of the minor” about the arrangement.
The victim escaped the pressure from her mother by leaving the house, before the parent’s arrest on Tuesday following a court decision.
The mother is facing the charge of “forced marriage committed against a minor”, punishable up to four years in prison.
