The United Nations in Georgia on Wednesday sent its condolences on the murder of a 14-year-old girl in eastern Georgia’s Sagarejo municipality on October 6 and called for a “prompt and thorough investigation“ into the case.
Media reports said the minor was killed by a man who had reportedly kidnapped her.
The UN office's comment came on International Day of Girl Child, with the representation highlighting the “urgent need” for increased attention and resources to "enable girls to realise their rights and achieve their full potential".
It also highlighted the importance of state protection and support services for children and their families to ensure child victims, including victims of sexual violence, receive “immediate and necessary” protection and support.
“Considering the importance of a multi-sectoral response to eliminate the harmful practice of child marriage, the UN in Georgia calls for coordinated actions to improve the State Child Protection Referral Procedures, law enforcement practices, child-friendly judicial processes, and adolescent-friendly health services”, the statement reads.
The importance of access to education, information, and health services for adolescent girls are one of the key tools for girls as it allows them to make informed decisions about the future and protect their freedom of choice, the organisation added.
The UN in Georgia remains committed to working with the Government of Georgia, civil society groups, and with human rights activists to address systemic problems that are the root causes of these tragedies”, the statement also noted.
In 2011, the UN General Assembly declared October 11 as International Day of the Girl to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
