Georgia "long ago" imposed the restrictions that different countries are now placing on Russia, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told reporters on Friday.

In his comments to the media on the Georgian Government’s stance not to join the sanctions against Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, Papuashvili underlined that Georgia had no leverage to impose more sanctions on Russia.

Georgia imposed the restrictions that different countries are now imposing on Russia long ago, be it travel restrictions, cutting off of diplomatic relations, etc. So, one could say that these countries are now joining us. We currently have limited relations with Russia, so it is difficult to talk about any additional measures,” he said.

On Thursday, Kelly Degnan, the United States Ambassador to Georgia, told journalists Georgia had "always been a good partner" in complying with international sanctions.

In her comments to the media on the Georgian Government’s stance not to join the sanctions against Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, Degnan underlined there had been no expectation for it to come up with bilateral sanctions.

Degnan stressed it was important to understand Georgia, like most other countries, would be complying with international sanctions to an extent it could.
