A display of works described as an "anthological show" is on at Galeria Hoy en el Arte, a venue in Buenos Aires, introducing Georgian-Argentine artist Gotcha Gaios and his "synthesising of expressive modalities" to visitors in the capital city.
In Shades, works by Gaios featuring elements ranging between surrealism, neo-expressionism and more can be found by viewers invited to the gallery, with the painter known for works on subjects of memory and recording of time and space.
Launched last week, the display brings to the fore Gaios' visions of a "dissent with our dehumanised world", a curatorial summary by Elena Oliveras has noted.
[A] significant core [in the artist's work] is the idea of chaos. Gotcha tries to pierce it, sectioning it into organisational plans that make up 'chaoid' realities. Through them we can glimpse a possible order in a context dominated by catastrophes, wars and all kinds of dehumanisations
- Elena Oliveras
Simultaneously, the paintings involve an appeal to the prospect of discovering elements of beauty in the despondency, outputting a "labyrinth of unknowns" in the process, the description of the works selected for the exhibition has noted.
Featuring Art Brut and action painting in the same vein as other tendencies in the works, Gaios also adds segments of contemporary Georgian handwriting to the pieces, while also working towards a volumetric outcome in the creations.
The works represent the artist who has been based in Buenos Aires since 1995 and has studied artistic forms with Argentine creatives including Juan Eichler, Victor Chab and Alicia Díaz Rinaldi. Gaios has become recognised for abstract, surreal, conceptual and collage compositions, completed in mixed media.
The artist has featured in displays including Testi Imaginari, hosted at Gallery of John & Daniela Dupuy in Lugano, Switzerland in 2019, and a show that marked the 30th Anniversary of Georgia´s Restoration of Independence at the Georgian Embassy in Buenos Aires the same year.
The ongoing exhibition at Galeria Hoy en el Arte is dedicated to another anniversary, marking the three decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Argentina. Shades will be open for visitors in the city through July.
