Georgia’s Special Investigation Service has launched an investigation following an alleged physical and verbal assault on a cameraman of the opposition-minded TV Pirveli channel, the agency announced on Sunday.

The inquiry follows an incident where the cameraman was allegedly assaulted by “several young men'' while preparing to broadcast in the early hours of Sunday in the Black Sea city of Batumi.

The Media Advocacy Coalition responded to the incident and called for a “swift and effective investigation” to protect reporters and avoid “encouraging” further assault against the media.

In its statement, the Special Investigation Service said it would carry out “all necessary investigative and procedural actions” to ensure an “objective and thorough” investigation and added the cameraman would be interviewed later during the day.

The investigation is proceeding with the Criminal Code article concerning unlawful interference with media’s professional activities.
