A photographic exploration of weightlessness, bodies in motion and freedom will be brought to Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum starting this Thursday, through the first multimedia exhibition of artist David Meskhi.
Bringing together the latest works by Meskhi, distinguished for both his photographic and directorial work, the two-month exhibition - entitled Color of Weightlessness - will display most of them for the first time, in a "study of identity, a search for freedom, and a deep emotional experience", organisers said in their summary ahead of the opening in Georgia's capital city.
The photographs will encompass works bearing the artist's signature theme of bodies in motion, highlighted in displays at venues ranging from Berlin's Gallery for Modern Photography to the downtown Project ArtBeat Gallery back in Tbilisi.
In Meskhi’s photographs, unearthly bodies exist beyond time. In the space which is open to mystical interpretations, to state of mind and body encapsulating the mystery of the being. In the space where weightlessness has its colour
- Summary for exhibition
They represent the snaps taken by the photographer in his observations of athletes taking leaps, moments of physical suspension and dynamics of human body, with the selection encompassing photographs produced between 2016-2021.
Beside still images, the exhibition - organised by Tbilisi Photo Festival and Goethe Institute - will feature three video installations and a sound composition Full of Sun by music artist Nika Kocharov, all used for the artistic exploration of simultaneous aspirations for freedom and limitations imposed by social norms.
Along with exhibitions of his photographic works at the Berlin gallery and London’s Calvert 22 Space over the recent years, Meskhi has also been honoured for his co-directing of the 2015 documentary When the Earth Seems to Be Light, awarded the Best First Appearance prize at that year's International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
Marking the closing of this year's Photo Festival, Color of Weightlessness will be open at the TPMM venue, located at 14, Merab Kostava Street in the capital, will be on through February 28.
